San George, Amsterdam
The Downtown Italian in the heart of Amsterdam
San George is a modern-day classic Italian serving a Venetian-inspired menu with authentic Italian dishes to share; from Burrata di Bufala, to Bistecca Taglia, and home-made pastas that can be enriched with the best quality of truffle. For the real Italian experience take one of the weekend specials on the menu; Seabass in Salt and a Whole Roast Leg of Lamb, which must be ordered 24 hours in advance.
We talked with Bastiaan Doesburg (39 years), Corporate Chef UMH Group / San George.
"You can stop by for a quick business lunch, a weekend brunch, an extensive lazy late lunch, pre theatre bite, a delicious dinner or a late night supper. Of course, you can also visit us for a drink with a small bite, or a scroppino in the evening."
"We've been thinking about an Italian version of our George concept for a long time; a version with an Italian 60's movie atmosphere. Think of stylish waiters, nice decor, good colours, top executed Italian classics and finest Italian wines, so you won't even miss France."
San George's central location brings a lively cosmopolitan atmosphere, attracting a mix of locals and international crowd. The interior is designed by Framework Architects. To give the restaurant an American-Italian Bistrot Chic appearance the designers used materials like stone, subway tiles, brass and steel in the interior. The complete picture is finished of with original chairs from Monaco and pictures of Slim Aarons on the wall. The restaurant has a surface of 140 m2 and 90 seats. Everyday of the week you're welcome from 12 pm. The kitchen closes at 11 pm.

"My favorite on the menu is Anti Pasti Misto with the extra's of Chef Luca di Santis, you get the Anti Pasti Misto and a variety of other dishes in miniature. I call it a journey through the menu. In addition, the Rib Eye from our charcoal grill, what a great taste! As the ultimate seduction we present our dessert trolley at your table! I'm sure you cannot resist!"
The interior is designed by Thomas Geerlings and Maarten ter Stege from Amsterdam's Framework Architects. The style they have chosen, they cal "American-Italian Bistro Chic." To achieve that look the designers used materials such as stone, brass and steel, complemented by furniture in a deep green velvet and various shades of blue through the interior. All sofa's and fauteuils were exclusively designed for this project. The black and white graphical floor makes the Bistro Chic feeling complete.
"To decorate we have chosen palm plants, which emphasize the Italian atmosphere and because of the sixties vibe. The photography is by Slim Aaron and wall lamps by Serge Mouille. The bar stools are very special, they're from a famous Casino in Monaco."
