Our mission explained

Clean water for everyone, everywhere

As some of you might know already; Marie-Stella-Maris has a social mission. Which is increasing access to clean water worldwide. And especially during these unprecedented times we thought it would be a good idea to explain a bit about how we got to this mission, and why we believe it is so important.
'The greatest inspiration came from the United Nations, when in 2010 they declared access to clean water and sanitation to be a basic human right.'
Marie-Stella-Maris
First of all, it starts with our belief that entrepreneurship and contributing to a social cause can go hand in hand. Isn’t it exciting that you are not only contributing to business, but also helping other people? Secondly, the one-for-one principle that arose in the mid 00’s (think TOMS) has fed our idea to directly link a purchase to a donation. However, the greatest inspiration came from the United Nations, when they declared access to clean water and sanitation to be a basic human right (2010) and called upon member states and businesses to contribute.
'Safe and readily available water is important for public health'
World Health Organization
Why is water so important? Water is the basis of all life on earth and thus one of our most basic needs in life. As World Health Organization explains clearly:

‘Safe and readily available water is important for public health, whether it is used for drinking, domestic use, food production or recreational purposes. Improved water supply and sanitation, and better management of water resources, can boost countries’ economic growth and can contribute greatly to poverty reduction.

When water comes from improved and more accessible sources, people spend less time and effort physically collecting it, meaning they can be productive in other ways. This can also result in greater personal safety by reducing the need to make long or risky journeys to collect water. Better water sources also mean less expenditure on health, as people are less likely to fall ill and incur medical costs and are better able to remain economically productive.’

Shortly summarized, access to clean and sufficient water not only brings positive health effects - like nowadays readily visible with all the handwashing measures taken - but it also brings positive economic and social effects of which most of us aren’t really aware. So this is why we do what we do, which is donating a fixed amount for every item sold to support clean water projects worldwide. Ever since we started in 2011, we have been able to donate over one million euro and have provided tens of thousands people with access to clean water.
